Belling the culture cat*

Like Pan Trinbago before it, the calypsonians’ and Carnival bandleaders’ bodies have now fallen under the financial oversight of the National Carnival Commission, the operational arm of the Ministry of Culture.
At least for this Carnival, the Government has decided that it will no longer hand over state funds to all three in the absence of a process that accounts for every dollar of taxpayer money given to them.
Not surprising, the organisations’ protestations about their compromised independence and objections to being hauled under NCC authority have not aroused sympathy from a public that has long lost confidence in their ability to manage the public money allocated to them on an annual basis.
In a crackdown against financial mismanagement, the NCC is also collecting the revenue from ticket sales to mas, pan and calypso shows.
