NATIONAL Under-14 and 16 champion Solange Skeene failed to become the host country's only champion when the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Trinity Cup continued yesterday at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua.
The Tranquillity Open runner-up and Sarinah Maduro were beaten 6-4, 7-5 in the Under-14 doubles final by top seeds Emma Weech of Bahamas and Guatemalan Deborah Dominquez Collado.
Collado, who had battled back from 6-3, 3-0 to defeat Skeene in the singles semi-finals the day before, had captured the singles crown earlier in the day when she cruised past Barbadian Hannah Chambers 6-4, 6-1.
John Chin produced two hard-fought wins yesterday to also complete a double crown indoors in the division.
The Jamaican edged Costa Rican Julian Lozano 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the singles final and later combined with Barbadian James MacKenzie to nose out Lozano and Gianluca Beaujon of Curacao 2-6, 6-2, 10/2 for the doubles crown.
Anya King, the only of 11 Trinidad and Tobago players to win a match outdoors in singles in the Under-18 division, exited in the doubles quarter-finals when she and American Nicole Kiefer went down 6-3, 6-1 against No, 2 seeds Khyanna Singh of St Vincent and Indian Rhea Verma – the top seed in singles.
Aidan Carter and Adam Ramkissoon, the winner and runner-up, respectively, last week in the Under-16 and 18 divisions of the Catch National Junior Championships, had beaten last year's national Under-18 champ Scott Hackshaw and Collado's brother Juan 7-5, 7-5 Wednesday to reach the quarters.
The T&T duo fought admirably yesterday before going down 7-5, 6-4 against the other Collado sibling, Jose, and Santiago Galan of Colombia.
In the Under-18 singles semis, American Mark Madlik, son of former Wimbledon Champion Hana Mandilkova, went down 6-0, 6-4 against third-seeded Puerto Rican Ignacio Garcia, while top seed Kirac Bekisoglu of Turkey halted American Alexander Kiefer.
The girls' final will also take place today and will involve Americans Dakota Fordham and Niluka Madurawe.
